AI pit detection for dried cherries

California dried-fruit processor
Scope
Ground-up development of an ML detection system for pits in dried cherries, integrated with multi-robot removal on a live, high-speed sorting line — model development, deployment, and production support.
Problem
A single pit in a finished bag is a food-safety liability, and no commercial detection system existed for pits in dried cherries — wrinkled, highly variable product screened at full line speed.
Outcome
A first-of-its-kind detection system, developed by Angold Engineering and running in commercial production since 2020. Continuous model and process improvement since — including tracing a silent software fault that was discarding roughly 40% of valid robot targets, fixed and verified on the running line. Ongoing production support, including off-hours response.

GNSS guidance & QC for pile-driving fleets

Utility-scale solar contractor
Scope
Centimeter-grade positioning, operator guidance, and as-built QC for pile-driving equipment across utility-scale solar sites in three states.
Problem
Construction tolerances tighter than the workflows built to hit them — with each site on its own local datum that no off-the-shelf GPS setting understands.
Outcome
Positioning tied correctly to each client site calibration rather than published control, a repeatable RTK base-station recipe deployed fleet-wide, remote fleet connectivity, and a field app operators use daily. On-machine sensor fusion work continuing.

Process control for a complex pasteurization line

Scope
Process control and HMI modernization for a complex, multi-stage pasteurization line.
Outcome
A modern operator interface on legacy process equipment, with remote diagnostics built in so problems get solved without waiting for a site visit.

Angold Engineering is led by Russ Angold, a licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer building at the intersection of agriculture, AI, and hardware. His AI defect-detection system has run in commercial production at a California food processor since 2020, with parallel R&D in specialty-crop harvesting automation and a universal AI-trainable sorting platform.

The firm is deliberately small: the engineer who scopes your project is the one who designs it, commissions it, and answers the phone when it breaks. The through-line in the work is production reality — plenty of engineering looks finished in CAD and falls apart on the plant floor or in the field. Angold Engineering's projects are judged where yours are: on uptime, throughput, and whether the crew actually uses the thing.

Closed-loop changes

Every production change is measured before, changed, measured after, and reported. No "should be fine."

Verified, not assumed

The system that's supposed to be running is checked against the one that actually is — down to the file hash.

There when it breaks

Production doesn't keep office hours, and neither does support for it. Commissioning isn't the end of the relationship.
